The Best School Isn't the Best School Fit for Every Child.

Why it's time to rethink what success looks like in school admissions

Last year we went on a journey looking at the work we’ve been doing and the impact we’ve made with families since starting School First.

When we went back and spoke with families and schools, repeatedly there was a tension within our industry where families are being led and often believe ranking of schools and credentialing are the only factors for why a child should attend a school.

We know this is not true and we want to change that perception!

Every season there's a moment almost every family we work with eventually reaches. It usually happens somewhere between the spreadsheets, the campus tours, and the third conversation that week about acceptance rates.

A parent pauses and asks, quietly, "Wait — what are we actually trying to find here?"

That question is the reason School First exists. And it's the reason we're launching “The Best School Fit” movement, public manifesto and brand platform. We are challenging the public discourse around admissions.

The Story We've All Been Sold

For years, families were told one story: getting in matters more than belonging once you're there. Prestige first. Fit later, if at all.

We don't buy it. Rankings can tell you what a school is known for. They can't tell you whether your child will be seen, supported, and set up to thrive there. That gap — between reputation and reality — is exactly what we built School First to close.

What We're Hearing From Families

We've spent years working directly with families navigating K-12 and college admissions, and one thing keeps surfacing no matter the zip code or income bracket: the process feels exhausting. Anxiety-inducing. Disconnected from what actually matters for a child's well-being.

And the cost isn't just stress. When families chase rankings over fit, we consistently see higher anxiety, weaker connection to school communities, and — too often — a mismatch that leads to disengagement, churn, or a school experience that undermines the very outcome parents were chasing in the first place.

Nobody sets out to put their child in the wrong environment. But when the whole system is built around "best," instead of "best fit," it's an easy trap to fall into.

A Different Question

So we're asking families to try something different. Instead of "Is this the most prestigious school?" — ask "Is this the right school for my child?"

It sounds simple. It isn't, really — not in a culture built around competition, comparison, and acceptance rates as the finish line. But it's the question that actually predicts whether a child will flourish.

For us, "fit" means a student feels:

  • Invited into a school community, not merely accepted by one
  • Included in the full life of the school, not positioned to simply survive it
  • Celebrated for who they are, not optimized for who a ranking says they should be
  • Centered throughout their educational journey, not just at the moment of admission

Why This Matters Right Now

We're seeing families — especially highly engaged parents in cities like New York, the Bay Area, D.C., Los Angeles and Boston — spend more time and money than ever navigating this process, often $5,000 to $50,000 with a consultant. And what they're navigating can still be fragmented, regional, and dominated by claims about rankings.

Families deserve a guide rooted in access, transparency, and trust — not prestige for its own sake. When families find the right fit instead of the highest ranking, we consistently see:

  1. Lower stress around the admissions process itself
  2. Stronger student mental health and overall wellbeing
  3. Reduced churn and a faster path to genuine learning momentum
  4. Deeper connection to school and peer communities
  5. A greater sense of belonging — and better outcomes, full stop

This Isn't a Campaign. It's a Commitment.

We're not rolling this out as a one-time announcement and moving on. The Best School Fit is how we work with every family, every season.

As we grow, now eleven consultants nationwide, we maintain our strong commitment to find that best fit school for every student and we are using this time to spread the word even further.   We are  launching this season with our brand manifesto video, and it will keep going through the stories we tell, the resources we continue to build, and the conversations we have with our national consultant networks and the families we serve.

Because here's the thing,  we deeply believe: when children feel they belong, everyone succeeds.
