Possibilities Begin with the Right Fit

This is part three of four in the School First “Best School Fit”series.  It is a movement where we are encouraging parents, educators, and admissions leaders to prioritize student belonging, well-being, and long-term success over prestige and rankings. The launch comes as families spend thousands of dollars navigating an increasingly stressful admissions process, often at the expense of their children's mental health and sense of belonging. Possibilities

I have spent more than a decade on the inside of independent school admissions in the Bay Area. I have helped shape the questions schools ask, worked to build practices that see the whole child, and watched the admissions landscape shift in real time; both the culture of this region and the expectations families bring to the process.

I have also sat across from countless parents who are brilliant, accomplished, and fiercely devoted to their children, all with the same deep hope: that their child will find a place where they truly belong and flourish. I understand that hope, as I felt it myself last admission season. Even with all my experience on the other side of the admissions office, being a parent in this process was no less stressful. Trying to determine the best fit for our daughter, the community we were looking for as a family, and how to weigh all of that through a blur of events, school visits, and competing impressions. It is a lot. What my experience did give me was clarity about what we were really searching for. And after years of working inside schools, I also know what it looks like when a child finds exactly that.

Here is what I have seen, over and over, when a child is in a school that truly fits them: they engage. They are challenged in ways that work for them, and they rise to meet it. They raise their hand in a class that terrifies them. They audition for the play, join the team, or sign up for the elective they have been curious about for years. They discover new interests alongside academic strengths they did not know they had. They try, sometimes fail, and come back the next day sharper and more motivated.

These students don't just celebrate their own wins. They cheer for their classmates. They become part of a community that pushes them forward, and they push it forward in return.

That is what the right fit unlocks; academic excellence, a love of learning, a sense of belonging, and a confidence that carries far beyond the school years.

As someone who has spent years inside these institutions and now works entirely on behalf of families, I get to ask the questions that matter most. Who is your child, really? What makes them light up? What do they need to feel safe enough to grow? And which schools, based on everything I know from the inside, are most likely to give them that?

When your child finds the right fit, everything changes.
